2010. All 289 cities listed are eligible for a certificate. Top 100 cities ranked.

2009. The 256 cities listed are eligible for a certificate based on their placement in these Award Categories. All top 75 cities are both ranked & classified.

2008. Certificates are available for 95 cities published in the 2008 Innovation Cities Index. Top 10 have a rank displayed.

2007. Certificates also available for the 22 listed cities in 2thinknow Innovation City Rankings 2007. Top 8 have a rank displayed.

* To bring consistency between 2008 and 2009 we have made minor adjustments, expanding the 2008 rankings to include the top 10, not 8 cities, as you may have seen in the earlier version. In the next expanded Index release in 2009, top 10% of cities scored are now recognized each year. eg. In 2009, there are 25 top nexus innovation cities, from 256 assessed. The next 20% are hub cities.

In 2008, 2thinknow released independent rankings of 95 cities on innovation, then the most comprehensive truly global rankings of a cities innovation potential. This was later rebranded* as the Innovation Cities Index 2008. The Index has been updated to 256 cities in the 2009 Index.

2008 rankings use the same analysis and methodology of ranking Innovation Cities™, criteria & city innovation models  outlined in the Global Innovation Review 2007 Annual. Available in reprint, the book explains the selection criteria for 2007; and discusses the top city rankings in some detail.

Basis.

* REVISIONS: This was released June 2008, on limited release as the Innovation Cities™ Rankings update. To bring it into consistency with 2009, it was later rebranded the Innovation Cities™ Index 2008, and the top 8 expanded later to a top 10.

METHOD: The methodology was the same as 2007 and outlined in the Global Innovation Review 2007 Annual, but based on analysing a greater set of cities selected, but not released until 2008.

This process has been substantially overhauled and expanded to 162 indicators and 256 cities, in the Innovation Cities Index 2009, with the process and framework outlined in the Innovation Cities Analysis Report.

From the Global Innovation Review 2007, in June 2008, 2thinknow decided to release an extended data set of 95 of the cities analyzed in 2007, with minor modifications.

The basis for the updated scores was the same Hire Innovation Loop model as the original 2007 Review, and broad 44 set of Innovation Indicators in 3 segments. The data was originally released as a 2007 Update, was available in a limited form via email, primarily to academic requests.

This  update was later renamed and made-available as the Innovation Cities Index 2008 CD-Rom. This CD-Rom contained a PDF of the 2007 Book, as well as 95 Cities Excel data & associated graphs.

Innovation Cities 2.0 Continued.

The decision to do this was made to allow us to direct our resources to a significant expansion of the Innovation Cities program in 2009. The very narrow perspective of city economic analysis persuaded our Executive Director, Christopher Hire, and the firm of the necessity of integrating trends into analysis in 2009, despite limited funding.

Books such as Black Swans & the Tipping Point had gripped the public’s mind, concepts which were integrated into our analysis in 2007. The firm, 2thinknow, increasingly focused on innovation analysis. 2thinknow began working on metrics and prototypes, and collecting more detailed city benchmarking data.

Inevitably, Hire’s city visits (especially short visits to Germany, Spain & Netherlands) , meetings and dialogue with City Officials, Intellectuals, Masters students, business thinkers and others lead to further development of Innovation Cities models & analysis techniques.

In the end of 2008, the backdrop was a change of US Government and the Global Financial Crisis, which 2thinknow analysis had predicted, was unwinding.

Next, the penultimate overhaul > Innovation Cities in 2009
