The Innovation Cities Index has the following categories:
- NEXUS. Innovation Cities. Top 25 Critical Cities ranked 1-25
- HUBS. Innovation Cities. Next 50 Key Cities ranked 26-75
- HUBS. Innovation Cities. Important Top-Ranked Cities (unranked).
- INFLUENCERS. Innovation Cities. Cities that exert influence (unranked).
Award certificates are issued in 5 corresponding classes, for 225 cities in the 2009 year. These are in descending order of importance:
- Certificate of Rank
- Certificate of High Commendation
- Certificate of Commendation
- Certificate of High Merit
- Certificate of Merit
Cities outside these ranges, or not listed, do not receive a certificate. In 2009, 31 cities (around 12%) selected scored insufficiently to be awarded. However, a larger number of 1,284 cities were excluded from scoring based on qualifying factors, so selection is an achievement.
City awards change from year to year, these are the 4 current categories, and 5 award classes since July 2009. These are planned to be used again in 2010.
